Over 80% of Employees Considering Leaving Their Jobs as AI Threatens Workplace Takeover

27% of the workforce in the UK is concerned with the rise of AI and how it is anticipated to outperform humans within the next five years. Meanwhile, ChatGPT is estimated to have reached 100 million monthly active users since its launch in January. This major technological development has culminated in 81% of employees considering leaving their jobs for better offers. This shows that leaving a job is often related to a lack of intrinsic motivation.

To counteract this, employee engagement experts at Maximillion, one of the UK’s longest-established corporate events agencies, have provided expert comments on how employers and organisations can improve employee engagement through intrinsic motivation tactics and emphasising the values of the corporation.

Employee motivation does not receive the attention that it requires for a company’s success, and ignoring it might harm the business’ workforce and output of content, products or services. On the other hand, employees who have fully been engaged in the organisation they are working for are 87% less likely to resign from their companies. However, there are several workplace strategies that employers and corporations as a whole should consider adopting to improve employee engagement and improve productivity as a result.

1 – Connect What Employees Do To What Their Values

To foster a stronger connection between employees and the organisation, revise your business’s mission statement to align better with employee values. Careers management platform, Handshake, revealed that 70% of the workforce in the UK want to join a company that has values that align with theirs. Employees are currently placing a higher value on representation and inclusivity in the workplace. Additionally, employees are also looking to see how their work has a direct impact on the organisation. This can be achieved through job crafting, where employers can rewrite job descriptions to directly link employees’ work with the organization’s mission, providing more meaning to their role.

2 – Offer Flexibility For Employees To Try New Work Tactics

Businesses should provide flexibility for employees to undertake different work tasks so that they can explore their own intrinsic interests in the corporation. Consider a job rotation programme in which employees can rotate through many roles inside a corporation in a short time. This strategy allows employees to find their personal interests within the role and what it is that motivates them. Helping to build this closer link between their job and personal fulfilment can be very effective in keeping them engaged. Studies have shown that highly engaged teams that are able to follow instinct interests in their profession can increase business profitability by 21% because of a higher quality output of work. 

3 – Provide Employees With More Autonomy Over Decisions

Employee autonomy, or the flexibility to make decisions and accept responsibility, is critical for promoting motivation. By allowing employees to make strategic decisions in the company’s best interests, without the constant requirement for managerial permission, you can promote a culture of freedom and responsibility that allows employees to pursue ideas that can motivate their intrinsic interests. Workers who are motivated by their managers to carry out meaningful work related to their own niches have been shown to improve their productivity by 20%. Examples of this include launching a new, interesting project or assignment with a coworker.

4 – Provide A Senior Employee As A Mentor For A New Recruit

Boosting the confidence of your employees can encourage them to take on tasks they are first apprehensive of, but will find personally satisfying to complete and to a high standard. 39% of employees feel underappreciated at work, so assigning mentors to new recruits and assisting them in building a social network in the corporation. When it comes to the onboarding process, managers who provided an employee in a senior position to mentor a new worker were 25% quicker at getting that new team member fully onboard.

In fact, 87% of employees expect their employers to help them find a balance between work and personal obligations, while 66% are motivated to stay at their company if they have some time for a corporate incentive programme.
